When people sit down at their computers for the first time to try to make money on the internet, it can be overwhelming.  There are many ways to make money on the internet, but it’s not as easy as a lot of ads (or people) make it out to be.  That’s why I wanted to go over some of the ways there are to make money.

Multi-Level Marketing (MLM), Also Known as Network Marketing

When I was first learning how to make money on the internet, I didn’t realize that multi-level marketing and network marketing were the same thing.  I have never had a desire to be involved in multi-level marketing.

What is it?  Well, more often than not a physical product or products is involved.  Your job is to not only sell the product but enroll other people on your team, at which point you will profit from THEIR sales and downlines.

Probably the most famous multi-level company is Amway.  We got ambushed at a dinner party once by an Amway pitch, and it left a bad taste in my mouth that has never gone away.  Other MLM companies include Isagenix, Scentsy, Forever Young, Mary Kay, Send Out Cards, Pampered Chef, Shaklee, Longaberger, doTerra, Legal Shield and I could go on.  There are many of them.

My opinion of MLMs is this:  if you like the products, you will get them at a lower price, which is a benefit.  Some companies will charge you a monthly maintenance fee, which can put a big dent in your profits.  Also remember that the intention of any company is to get money flowing to the corporate office.  Some people do very well in MLM, but most people don’t.

If you are a go-getter who loves the product, can recruit people, manage a team, sell products, hold sales meetings and attend local networking events, this may be your cup of tea.  Just be sure to do your research before jumping into anything, because brochures, samples, and other stuff you need to sell the product can add up.

Matrixes are a lot like MLM except they don’t involve products.  To be perfectly honest, I haven’t quite wrapped my head around them, and they seem like pyramid schemes.  All I can figure out is that you sign up with someone and buy in.  Then your income is determined by who you can get to sign up and buy in, and your downline does the same.  Somehow the money floats up to you.

I’ve never been involved in matrixes, and it’s not some place I want to go.

Paid to Click (PTC)  or Pay Per Click (PPC)

PTC/PPC sites are designed to pay money to people who go to them and click on their ads.  The most popular sites are ClixSense and NeoBux, but there are many others.

I tried PTC for a while (less than a week).  I found it too boring, plus you don’t make much for clicking ads – it’s one cent or less per click.  The only way to make more money is to buy one of their premium programs.  However, if you have lots of time or perhaps a disability that keeps you housebound, you might want to look into it.

Training or Information Marketing Programs

These types of programs either sell packages of business information at various prices or provide training for business.  Companies like MOBE, MLSP, Business Success Alliance, and Four Corners are in this category.  They tend to be high ticket – meaning that it costs a bunch of moola to get in.  They usually have monthly membership fees, as well.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is probably the easiest business model, because you are selling other people’s products.  They can be physical products, through companies like Amazon or Wal-Mart or digital products through companies like JVZoo or Clickbank.

The nice thing about affiliate products is they are done for you, usually including the website, banners and other affiliate materials.

Many bloggers sell affiliate products from their blogs, and they can also successfully be sold on search engines like Google and Bing.  They don’t sell very well on safelists or traffic exchanges, though.

Other Ways to Make Money on the Internet

If you are creative and have the time and money to spend before your business takes off, you can earn money by coaching, working as a virtual assistant, creating and selling your own products, running membership sites, web and graphic design, freelancing, and many more ways to make money on the internet.

I, personally, have settled on affiliate marketing because it is a great way to make money.  It is also less time consuming than most of the other ways to make money on the internet.

What do you think?  What successes have you had?  What have you tried that hasn’t worked out for you?  We’d love to hear about your experiences, so please tell us what you have done to make money on the internet and share with your friends.
